GDE launches online admissions for grades one and eight learners

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) announced on July 9 that its online admissions system for learners going to Grades One and Eight will go live on July 11.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has introduced its online admissions system for grades one and eight learners, scheduled to go live on July 11, as announced on July 9.

Matome Chiloane, Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, highlighted the application system will operate until midnight on August 12.

Stressing the importance of online applications, Chiloane emphasised parents must apply via the system to secure admission for their children in public schools for the academic year 2025.

“For each new application cycle, parents need to create a fresh profile. This applies to every child, whether entering Grades One or Eight,” stated Chiloane.

He urged parents to use their home address within the school feeder zone when selecting schools to optimize placement proximity.

To apply, parents and guardians should visit www.gdeadmissions.gov.za

The department recommends choosing a minimum of three and a maximum of five schools during the application process.

Chiloane cautioned selecting only one or two schools might reduce the chances of placement if those schools reach full capacity.

“Selecting multiple schools increases the likelihood of securing placement,” added Chiloane.

Chiloane clarified parents cannot submit more than one application per learner to the same school.

It is crucial to provide a reliable cellphone number during registration to receive essential SMS notifications and updates regarding the application status.

Applicants have the option to upload required documents onto the system or submit them directly to schools within seven school days of applying.

Chiloane urged parents and guardians to upload or submit certified copies of the following documents:

• Parent and child ID or passport

• Refugee permit

• Asylum seeker permit

• Permanent residence permit

• A study permit

• South African birth certificate

• Proof of home address

• Proof of work address

• Latest school report and clinic card/immunisation report (Grade One only)

• Latest Grade Seven school report (Grade Eight applicants only).
