Victims support unit needs your help

Gender-based violence incidents have increased over the past year.

According to Nigel SAPS station commander Lieutenant Colonel Louise Droskie, gender-based violence incidents have increased over the past year and the victim empowerment centres (VECs) at police stations are being overburdened with cases.

The VECs provide a range of services targeted at individuals who have suffered harm, trauma and/or material loss through violence, crime, natural disaster, accidents and/or through socio economic conditions.

Nigel, Alra Park and Mackenzieville currently have no safe haven and the Nigel Clean-Up group are urging the community to open their hearts and to help them make Nigel’s VEC a true place of safety again.

The Nigel Clean-Up group is assisting Nigel SAPS to get their victim empowerment centre back to a real place of safety. The state of the centre has deteriorated and is in desperate need of maintenance.

“We do not need new equipment, second-hand will do just fine. Building material, plumbing material, blankets and toiletries are some of the other items required, as well as skilled workers to help with renovations,” said Ilze Willemse from the Nigel Clean-Up group.
