Shocking announcement by EMM: public areas to be used as dumping sites

NIGEL - Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has made an official announcement this morning, saying that public areas such as parking lots, sports fields and residential plots may from today be used as trash dumping sites.

This is a result of poor management and the absence of techniques to eliminate garbage and the local dumping site (Nigel Transfer Station), outside of town.

“The dumping site outside of town is no longer viable, due to population pressure,” Zolani Moloi said during a media conference at the municipal offices in Alberton. “We had to implement actions to release pressure on the system,” he explained.

The municipality’s new recycling and waste drop-ff sites will from now on offer residents free and convenient access to drop off recyclables, as well as bulky garage and garden waste on any day of the week.

Residents and business owners can drop off bulky garage or garden waste, builders’ rubble or recyclables, on any day of the week, at any of the drop-off sites listed below. Loads of up to 1 500 kg (1,5 tons) of non-hazardous waste may be dropped off at no cost.

Some drop-off sites also accept residential special waste, such as motor oil, cans and metal, paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, polystyrene and electronic waste (e-waste), for recycling. You can even have your garden waste chipped at some sites and sent to the composting industry. Waste that is not recyclable or re-useable is then transported to the landfill for disposal.

Dumping sites in Nigel are as follows:

* Jim Fouche sports field and John Vorster Stadium;

* the open field next to the canal in Athlone Street;

* the open field opposite Harry’s Bakery in Northern Street;

* the open field next to Nigel Taxi Rank in Northern Street (see photos);

* the open field opposite John Vorster Stadium in Chaimberlain Street and

* the open field opposite Nigel Dros in Springs Road.

“It will take some time for residents to adjust to the new custom, but it’s only rubbish – so trash it!” Moloi said at the media briefing.
