Donate blood and save a life
SANBS was at the Victorian Village in Voortrekker Street, where Elisma and George Botes did their bit to save a life.
According to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors.
A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation and for this reason, blood donors need to donate regularly.
Donors can give their blood as often as every eight weeks. Every unit of blood can save a minimum of three lives, as the SAMBS separate the donated blood into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.
The SANBS aims to collect 3 000 units of blood per day to ensure a safe and sufficient blood supply in the health care system.
On June 1, SANBS was at the Victorian Village in Voortrekker Street, where Elisma and George Botes did their bit to save a life. George is aiming for his record of 50 units and donated his 38th unit.
Sister Nomfundo Khumalo thanked the community for their donations and reinforced that every unit donated can make a difference.
