Cambridge FC stays second on the log

Cambridge eyeing a playoff spot.

Cambridge Football Club is riding a wave and closing in on a playoff spot.

Cambridge FC hosted Callies at Duduza Stadium on April 27 and walked away with a 2-0 win.

It was important for Cambridge to come away with a win to cement their place on the log whereby Callies FC is facing a possible relegation prospect at the end of the season.

Cambridge dominated proceedings from early on and kept possession of the ball for long periods. Various opportunities to score in the first 15 minutes presented itself but Cambridge could not convert it into goals.

At the 15-minute mark, Oupa Pa Mbokazi scored the first goal for Cambridge. The opportunity came from a corner kick with Oupa on hand to seal the goal with a header.

Further opportunities from both sides were not taken and the first half ended with Cambridge ahead 1-0.

In the second half, both teams tried to press forward as much as possible with Callies trying their utmost to get the equaliser but with no success. In the 70th minute, Thomas Kgope scored Cambridge’s second goal to secure the win.

In the last 10 minutes, Cambridge had to play with 10 players as Njabulo Mahlangu was red-carded. Cambridge stood firm in their defence and did not allow Callies any further opportunities.

Cambridge is in second place on the Hollywood Bets league log with two matches remaining. Thereafter playoff matches will be done between the top four teams.

“We will take each match one at a time as the boys know what is at stake,” said head coach, Minhle Dinka Cooper Mthimkhulu.

“It’s not going to be easy but we have a community to represent at the highest level,” said chairperson Ignatius Maphike.
