Looting leads to protest

The foreign nationals just want to work in peace.

Concerned shop owners and residents of Heidelberg, Ratanda and Shalimar Ridge are protesting today (January 31) against the looting of foreign-owned businesses in the area.

The fed-up foreign nationals claim they are being victimised and not treated equally.

The protesters are en route to the Johannesburg CBD to hand over a memorandum.

A concerned local shop owner, who asked not to be named, said, “We are here to work peacefully together, but certain businesses and community members are not allowing us to do so. All we want to do is earn a living to take care of our families, and that is a struggle at the moment with the violence against us.

“We need intervention so the looting and violence against us can stop.”

A bus full of protesters left the Heidelberg area, hoping to get assistance from the Gauteng government offices.
