City attending to waste removal backlog

Municipality to fast-track reopening of closed landfill sites.

The City of Ekurhuleni is working to address the challenges experienced with waste removal services, which have been compounded by the closure of multiple landfill sites.

The city is actively engaging with stakeholders to expedite the reopening of these sites.

In the meantime, action is being taken to clear mini-dumpsites and transfer stations to alleviate the pressure on the Platkop landfill site, which is currently the only operational site.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve this issue. On March 10, the Rooikraal landfill site will begin operating at a limited capacity, which we hope will further ease the pressure on Platkop,” said MMC for Environmental Resources and Waste Management, Brandon Pretorius.

“We have advanced plans to fast-track the reopening of the affected facilities to attend to the city-wide waste removal backlog.”
