Look out for this invasive weed

The weed must be removed since it has a negative impact on the biodiversity.

Santana Pestana and Rouché Pepler of Earth Owl recently noticed pompom weed growing in the area.

The growth of the weed is a concern since it is an invasive species according to the National Environment Management: Biodiversity Act.

“It must be controlled and removed,” Pestana said.

“It causes degradation of the grasslands and wetlands, reduces biodiversity and lowers the grazing capacity since it is inedible for herbivores.”

Pestana and Pepler noticed that the weed has increased rapidly along roadsides and on farms in the Bultfontein, Rietkuil and Holgatfontein areas.

“These weeds need to be destroyed. As the custodians of mother nature, a sustainable environment and the conservation of biodiversity is our responsibility.”

Any sightings of these weeds may be reported to santana@earthowl.co.za and should also include the date, location, habitat and approximate area involved.
