The shooting occurred between 06:00 and 07:00 on February 19 and SAPS Heidelberg reacted swiftly to the call.

According to Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate (police spokesperson), the first shot was fired through the windscreen, whereafter the suspects moved towards the passenger side where they fired another shot through the door. Neither driver nor passenger was directly hit and merely sustained shrapnel injuries to the face. After claiming money from the truck driver, the suspects sped off and several kilometres further, they executed the same modus operandi with another truck, which was approaching from the opposite direction. Nobody was seriously injured in the second shooting and the robbers managed to flee.

The driver of the first truck was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance, where he was treated for facial injuries caused by the shotgun pallets. Police are investigating the shootings.
