EMPD’s stance on social media

Deliwe Ndlovu from the EMPD shared how she felt about the use of phones to record crimes such as assault and theft instead of helping the victim.

Deliwe Ndlovu from the EMPD has called on residents not to record another person’s misery, but rather to help them or at least offer to do so.

Ndlovu posed the question: “Is social media bad for us or are people just using it for the wrong reasons?”

Ndlovu says she has seen people posting videos of a person being assaulted or robbed (as many of us have). But this particular situation begs the question, why do people rather take photos or videos than offer or attempt to help?

“What happened to humanity or conscience as human beings?” she asked.

Ndlovu is reminding people to think about how they would feel if they were to be the victim.

“What if it’s you who is being robbed or assaulted? How would you feel if someone took a video to circulate it on social media and gain a bit of fame instead of helping?” she asked.

“It’s time we should go back to our roots to help each other where we can,” she stated. She said she felt we need to bring back our humanity in such situations and focus on helping instead of social media possibilities.

“Let us not turn another person’s misery into our moment of fame.”
