Ride for Education starts in Heidelberg

Heidelberg saw the start of the Ride for Education tour now in its 12th year.

The 1965 Ride for Education is now in its 12th year, but due to Covid-19, some cyclists took part virtually the past two years.

This year’s ride started at the Suikerbosrand Life Hospital.

The hospital has been in partnership with the ride since its incep–tion. Hospital manager Kubashnee Naidoo is part of the cycling tour as a participant.

“Challenging the body, mind and soul to be better has always been my curiosity,” said Naidoo.

“My curiosity peaked in 2019 on meeting Tony Frost, and I knew it is something I wanted to do.

“Riding for a cause makes it all worthwhile knowing I made a difference in the life of someone else.”

The ride is an 850km cycle ride that will end in Queenstown on April 21. It isn’t a cycle race even though there will be mini-races between the cyclists.

Frost thanked all the sponsors and those who will assist along the route.

Frost said, “This ride is important to me because this country, especially the town and people of Queenstown, have given me so much.

“This represents a visible and meaningful way of giving back.”

Frost was one of the initial riders in 2011 and is still going strong.

A group of Harley Davidson riders escorted the cyclists out of Heidelberg at the start of the race.

The cyclists were also entertained by the Suikerbosrand staff choir.

Each cyclist was responsible to raise their funds to take part in the ride. The funds that are raised are all placed into an education scholarship and bursary fund that enables deserving learners to attend quality schools.

About 100 bursaries have already been awarded to deserving learners in the Queenstown area.
