The Nigel Rotarians were urged by the district governor Annie Steijn to continue the good work and to harvest younger generations to secure the future of the organisation.
The meeting was held at the Italian Club on February 12 and included a formal dinner.
Annie is a dedicated Rotarian and lawyer who practises in Benoni. As district governor she also pays visits to the 85 Rotary clubs that fall within her district and offers her support and encouragement throughout the year.
She stressed the fact that there are a considerable number of families in Nigel who need help and as a humanitarian organisation, she encouraged the Rotarians to remain focused on lending their assistance.
“We need to act parallel with our slogan ‘Service before self” ” she said.
She discussed some of the community projects undertaken by the clubs she monitors, saying that there is much that can be changed in the lives of others.
She said the Rotarians need to strive to lighten up Rotary in all possible ways, indicating that the Rotary theme for 2015 is ‘Light up Rotary’.
Annie addressed Rotarians on the expansion of the movement, placing strong emphasis on the need for younger members.
“Rotary’s future lies with our youth, we need to have the public more involved and get them to know more about Rotary,” she said.
Rotary offers Rotaract, Interact and Rotakids clubs, affiliated to Rotary, for younger generations to get involved in community projects which are suitable for their age groups.
“Look into your club and source younger generations who will offer the organisation a fresher perspective of the needs in our community”, Annie said.
She concluded by encouraging members to continue the good work and to always place oneself second to service.
