New look for old station

Tourists will not only bring the necessary financial support and exposure to Heidelberg, but can also take an official tour through history and visit heritage sites.

The Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom visited the old Heidelberg station on February 3.

He was here as part of a fact finding mission on invitation of the Heidelberg Heritage Bier Museum. This was to investigate the possibility of having it declared a national tourist attraction.

The minister was impressed with the Heidelberg initiative and said to Mr Bouwe Wiersma (founder member of Heidelberg Heritage Bier Museum) that “tourism must be prioritised in the Councilā€™s IDP (Integrated Development Plan of Lesedi) and be budgeted for to unlock national funding.”

On the premises, tourists will not only bring the necessary financial support and exposure to Heidelberg, but can also take an official tour through history and visit heritage sites that include 18 venues in Heidelberg and 12 on the Ratanda Liberation Tour, depicting the total history of Heidelberg and its influence on South African history.
An official commemorative certificate that honours Nelson Mandela (which he also co-signed and received the first official copy) was handed over to the minister as well as MMC of Development and Planning Councillor Themba Motsepe, by Ernst du Preez.
