Country’s lockdown inspires musician to release a single

He said the instrumental song is easy listening with elements of a strong South African Mbhaqanga feel, Afro Jazz and a bit of classical music.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for a national lockdown inspired musician Kenny Mathaba to release an aural guitar single.

The instrumental single titled Sisonke, translated as We Are Together, is aimed at giving hope as the country tirelessly fights the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mathaba’s instrumental song is a follow-up on his February 2020 release of the single titled Khorapshin as a build-up to his forthcoming album.

He is a guitarist, songwriter and music producer with a recognised career dating back to the 80s hit songs I’m Suffering and Wola Wola and the 2003 hit Morwa by Jonas Gwangwa.

Mathaba said that his song is relevant to what the country is facing.

“As we’re all locked down in our respective countries with very little to do, I asked myself what is it that I could offer musically and virtually.

“I then looked back into my archives and came across the track Sisonke.

“This song was recorded in the late 90s but was never released at the time,” he said.

He said the song has received positive feedback judging from one of his old performances back in 2016 and 2017.

“The late Ray Phiri once asked me to perform something on stage during one of his performances.

“I observed positive feedback from Phiri, subsequently a buy-in from the band and finally a good reaction from the audience.

“I also feel that the song will pay tribute to Phiri as well,” said Mathaba.

He said the instrumental song is easy listening with elements of a strong South African Mbhaqanga feel, Afro Jazz and a bit of classical music.

“I also play the Hawaiian steel guitar, a scarce instrument popularly known through the music of artists such as Dolly Parton and Don Williams.

“This can be heard on the bridge of Sisonke.

“If you listen to the song to the end you will realise my experience in handling the acoustic guitar and solo work,” he said.

He also encouraged the community to be patient in obeying lockdown regulations and Covid-19 guidelines.

His song is available on all digital platforms such as iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, Pandora and Google Play.
