Mazda CX-3 class-competitive

The Mazda CX-3 has been a smash hit for the Japanese automaker since it made its debut in 2015. Based on the Mazda2, the CX-3 adds a slightly more practical dimension to the Mazda small car formula.

Its larger CX-5 sibling started the Mazda SUV craze in 2012; however, the CX-3 ushered in the current SUV line’s design language and has cemented the Mazda SUV range as a must-drive before making your decision on any vehicle within the compact and medium SUV segments respectively.

The test car

Recently, I had the CX-3 2.0 Individual Plus auto for an evaluation. The flagship CX-3 showcases just how much kit the brand can offer, although you’ll most certainly pay for the privilege, with a retail price of R412 300.

Features

For this rather substantial capital outlay you do get a full house of features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, six airbags, climate control, a leather-trimmed multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot assist, a head-up display, a MZD 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a reverse camera, a Bose sound system, adaptive headlamps, leather seats and a sunroof, to name but a few.

Engine and gearbox

Powering the CX-3 press vehicle was the familiar 115 kW and 206 N.m 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine mated to a six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The powertrain in this particular product works well, which could be down to its relatively low 1 270kg kerb weight, making the engine and gearbox well-matched to this package. In terms of efficiency, Mazda claims a combined consumption figure of 6.7 L/100km, however, I was able to register a figure of 8.4 L/100km during my weeklong tenure.

Practicality

It’s in the practicality stakes where the CX-3 loses ground though, with a small second row of seating and a 264-litre boot, the rear quarters are best suited for children and small adults while a holiday trip may necessitate a trailer to carry a family’s luggage.

Verdict

The CX-3 remains a well-built, stylish and sensible choice within the compact crossover segment. For those looking for something that’s similar to a traditional hatchback in terms of dimensions and drive quality, but with a raised ride height, this may just be the crossover for you, juts be weary of the cramped rear quarters and shop through the entire range to find the CX-3 with enough specification to satisfy your needs and budget .
