PRINT EXCLUSIVE: Teanation on a mission to keep kwaito alive

Teanation emerges from Kwanele Park in Katlehong to keep kwaito alive.

South Africa has a rich musical history with a variety of sounds, genres, musical cultures and subcultures.

From this variety came kwaito in the late 1980s.

This genre is a variant of house music and deep baselines with catchy lyrics.

With the rise of local hip-hop music and afro-jazz during the late 2000s, many suggested kwaito was dead as no prominent kwaito artists were releasing quality music.

However, kwaito lovers across the country and artists such as Teanation from Kwanele Park in Katlehong emerged and disputed these claims.

Teanation is a rap duo made up of friends Bafana Zikalala and Junior Chambale.
