Boxing legend’s life takes to the stage

The life of Brian Mitchell plays out on the Emperors Palace stage.

Emperors Palace presents The Road Warrior: The Life of Brian Mitchell, a magnificent rags-to-riches tale of a rebellious teen’s journey to the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

The show, written and directed by industry stalwart Tim Plewman, is a touching portrayal of the life of the 12-time world boxing champion, and will take place in the Theatre of Marcellus from October 26 to 29.

A mixture of humour and pathos, the show centres around Mitchell’s career in the ring with blow-by-blow accounts of his highest achievements and lowest moments as a boxer, and what it took for him to reach his dream of becoming a world champion.

It’s a multi-media presentation with footage from his greatest moments, music of the times, and even a little fancy footwork from the maestro himself.

Revered as the greatest South African boxer of the 20th century, Mitchell held both the WBA and IBF World Junior Lightweight titles and is a six-time recipient of the State President Sportsman of the Year Award.

His professional career, which saw 43 professional wins, one loss and three draws, undoubtedly singles him out as the real deal – a professional to his bootstraps.

“Very few of us will ever understand what it takes to be a world-class boxer, but The Road Warrior will offer a rare glance into the life of one of boxing’s greatest, making it a must-see for sports fans and theatre-lovers alike,” said Andi Shaughnessy, the resort’s entertainment manager.

For more information contact the Emperors Palace Box Office on 011 928 1297/1213 or visit www.emperorspalace.com.

The show will be performed at 8pm from Thursday to Saturday, with a Sunday matinee show at 3pm.
