On This Day in History: Janet opens Rhythm Nation Tour
On this day in 1990, pop superstar Janet Jackson's first concert tour began. It was 'The Rhythm Nation World Tour' in celebration of her album of the same name.
On this day in 1990, American recording artist Janet Jackson’s record label A&M announced The Rhythm Nation World Tour, her first headlining world tour to promote her fourth studio album Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814. It became the most popular tour by a debut artist ever and Janet continued to open doors for black female entertainers.
The tour would also contain material of her third studio album Control (1986). The tour was managed by Roger Davies and Rusty Hooker and developed by musical director Chuckii Booker. It saw her trek through United States, Canada, Japan, The Netherlands, Germany, UK and Brazil throughout 1990 until it came to a close in Japan in November 1990.
The album was the most popular album of 1990 and is the only album that had seven top five hits on Billboard Hot 100 and have number one pop hits in three calendar years.
