Choirs sing their hearts out for top spot

Top choirs in Ekurhuleni compete for a spot on the national stage.

The top five choirs from Ekurhuleni challenged each other note for note, last Sunday, at the Ekurhuleni Regional Choral Competition, held at the Germiston City Hall.

Up for grabs was a spot on the stage at the Ekurhuleni Melting Pot Choral Music Festival to be held as a tribute to Oliver Tambo at Carnival City at the end of the month.

Victorious was the East Rand Twelve Apostles Church in Christ (TACC) choir from Vosloorus.

On October 31 and November 1, the choir will gain a national audience as a guest choir when the likes of Gauteng Choristers, Thabong Serenades and SA Singers compete to be named the country’s top choir.

In addition to that, the East Rand TACC choir was awarded a R50 000 cash prize.

Buhle Melodius Choir from Tsakane claimed second position in the standard choir category, and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department choir took the third spot.

They also were awarded R50 0000 each, while position four went to Ekurhuleni Choristers who won a digital Yamaha keyboard donated by the Melting Pot Company.

“The City of Ekurhuleni endeavours to advance the passion of choral music which O R Tambo had.

“As such, we want to advance local choral music to greater heights so as to nurture the existing talent,” said MMC for sports, recreation, arts and culture Clr Dora Mlambo.
