Flowing talent

Local aspiring rapper has big plans for his music career.

Mduduzi Mahlangu (22), also known as MJay Da Spoilt Brat, is making his way in the music industry.

The youngster told the GCN that his stage name was derived from the treatment he received from his godmother, Zodwa Radebe.

“My godmother used to get me anything I wanted and needed when I was a little boy and I had a group of girls who would buy me treats voluntarily wh,ile I was at Liverpool Secondary School,” said Mahlangu.

“All these things made me realise that I was actually spoilt, hence my stage name.”

Mahlangu started writing when he was 12.

“I have always had a love for music but, due to not being able to gain access to studios, I put off making music for a while,” he said.

“During the break I decided to research music and find myself as an artist, because my passion and determination pushed me to continue pursuing music.”

“I started entering hip hop competitions in 2011 and, in 2012, I was nominated for the best newcomer and most downloaded music awards at the BenCity Awards.

“Although I didn’t win the awards, the nominations really motivated me.”

The Lambton youngster was so encouraged by the nominations that he decided to form a rap group with his friend in 2013.

“Nhlanhla ‘Uniq Kid’ Tshabalala and I started Fantastic Fam,” he said.

“In the same year the group was nominated for best rap group at the BenCity Awards and we won the best performance award at the Oasis Talent Show, held by the Oasis of Life Family Church.”

Although the group is making steady progress, the young talent said he is focusing on promoting his new mix-tape.

“I am currently marketing my solo mix-tape and working on an album which I hope to release next year,” he explained.

“The mix-tape is more focused on my life’s journey and experiences.”

Mahlangu had a few motivational words for the youth.

“Always dream big and do what you love, because that is what will make you happy and it has great potential to elevate you to greater things in life,” he advised.
