Jewish music superstar set to perform

Enjoy an evening of Jewish music at Carnival City.

The singing superstar of Jewish music, Yaakov Shwekey, will be back in South Africa and performing live at the Carnival City Big Top Arena, at 8pm on July 3.

The concert forms part of his world Kolot Tour.

The show will also feature popular Canadian singer-songwriter Baruch Levine and a 22-piece orchestra, led by Bryan Schimmel.

Jerusalem-born Shwekey was raised in Brooklyn, New York.

His career in music started when he and his brother, Yisroel Meir, sang with the Miami Boys Choir.

Since then he has gone on to make 15 albums, including Kolot, which has just been released.

His most famous song is Racheim, whose lyrics are from the prayer after eating, asking God to have mercy on the Jewish nation and the city of Jerusalem.

Vehi She’omdah, which debuted on his Live in Caesaria concert DVD, also became a major hit for Shwekey.

His other hit songs include Cry No More, Ra’u Banim, Bo’ee Be’shalom, Lo Ya’avod, Shomati and Im Eshkacheich, and many more.

Kolot is an Israeli/Mizrahi style album and accompanying Shwekey are leading musicians from Israel and the United States.

Songs on the new album include the bouncing and unconventional song, Am Yisrael, Samcheim and Eis Rekoid, Zeh Hakatan, and two Chuppah songs, Tefillat Kallah and Kamu Boneho, among others.

Now on his first visit to South Africa, Orthodox Jewish American composer and singer Baruch Levine grew up in Toronto.

His compositions have become popular throughout the Orthodox Jewish world.

Besides singing his own songs, Levine will also perform some duets with Shwekey.

Accompanying Shwekey and Levine will be an orchestra led by Bryan Schimmel, which will feature three musicians from Israel.
