Vryburger rugby teams take league victory

This win is inspiration, the boys brought home something that will cheer the school and the parents.

Hoërskool Vryburger High School has etched its name into the annals of the school’s history as both the junior and senior rugby teams clinched the Lions League Cup this season.

This achievement marks the first time in the school’s history that both teams have secured the prestigious title in the same year.

Both teams maintained an unbeaten streak throughout the tournament, a testament to their skill and determination.

Their success has earned them spots in the quarter-finals of the Noordvaal Cup.

The senior team will face Sannieshof, enjoying the advantage of a home game, while the junior team will compete against The Leopards from North West.

Coach Ruan de Lange praised the teams’ dedication, attributing their unbeaten run to their effective game plans and resilience.

“Despite tougher opponents, our teams executed their strategies successfully.

“This win is a significant achievement for the school and will be a source of pride for both the students and their families,” said de Lange.

He noted that last year only the senior team won the Lions League, but they were defeated in the Noordvaal Cup semi-finals.

This year, however, the collective effort and sacrifices made by both coaches and players are aimed at clinching the Noordvaal Cup.

Coach Fana Moyo highlighted the promising future of the school’s rugby programme, noting that most of the players are still in lower grades.

“The tradition of winning continues. Over the past three years, we’ve consistently exceeded expectations. Our senior team has only two matric students, so we anticipate a stronger, more experienced team next season,” Moyo said.

Despite financial challenges, Moyo expressed gratitude for community support, including sponsorship from Ackermans Pharmacy for medical kits.

“We still face financial hurdles, particularly with travel costs for away games. We encourage the community to continue their support as we strive for further success,” he said.
