Jenny Wu Sports Academy embraces the spirit of Mandela Day everyday

The Jenny Wu Sports Academy marked Mandela Day at their facilities last Thursday in Forthringham Park, Malvern.

Serving Malvern, Germiston, and nearby areas, Jenny Wu founded the academy in 2018.

The potential of the local youth and the lack of community support for sports-inspired Wu to establish the academy to nurture and develop young talent.

“At JW Academy, we strive to make every day a Mandela Day by supporting and grooming young talent and showcasing opportunities in sports,” Wu stated.

Last Thursday’s event celebrated the players’ achievements and the Academy’s six-year journey, with the distribution of awards for performance and sports-related gifts.

“This Mandela Day is special, as we plan to refurbish our facilities with the help of sponsors and donors.

We are grateful for today’s donors who made the players feel special and showed them we believe in them,” Wu added.

The academy offers training in soccer, basketball, and netball to over 100 players aged 13 and above.

Teams participate in regional tournaments and have tailored weekly training sessions to meet their evolving needs.

They also play weekly friendly matches to expose players to competitive play and allow the coaches to assess their development.

Patrick Nkwadi, City of Johannesburg operations manager for sport and recreation in Region F, praised the academy’s efforts.

“They give these young people the opportunity to change their lives through sports.

“The future is in their hands, and sport is the perfect tool to keep young people off the streets. The academy can offer these children that chance,” Nkwadi said.
