Anele Magubane, who was recently named as East Rand United’s new captain, is determined to lead the team to the finals of the Merlin League.
Magubane joined the club three years ago.
He played for the Raiders Rugby Club for most of his career. He also represented Tshwane University of Technology in the Varsity Shield.

We caught up with Magubane to find out more about him and his rugby career.
Share your thoughts on being selected to lead ERU for this season.
Being a captain is always an honour because it means coaches see leadership skills that you don’t see in yourself.
How have your teammates responded to you as their new leader?
The team has responded well. They were actually more excited than I was, and they have given me support.
You are a flyhalf for ERU. Can you play any other positions?
I can play a lot of other positions like scrumhalf, inside centre and wing.
Which challenges are you looking forward to the most?

I look forward to leading a group of young players that we have and keeping my players motivated. As you know East Rand is struggling with resources.
What would you like to achieve as captain?
I would like to see the team in the finals of the Merlin League.
United had a few tough seasons and the lack of resources remains an issue. How do keep the team motivated?
Keeping the team motivated is easy. You need to lead from the front and always be the first one at practice and games.

How do you feel about United playing in the Merlin League instead of the Peregrine League?
Playing in the Merlin League was a difficult take at first, but we understood why management made that decision. We just had to take it on the chin and move on.
