Germiston Callies runner wins bronze at provincial champs

Fifteen-year-old Pila is an Elspark High School Grade Eight leaner and athlete. He has booked his ticket to the national championships.

Germiston Callies runner Malesela Pila won a bronze medal at the 2024 Central Gauteng Athletics Track and Field provincial championships at the Germiston Stadium.

The championships took place over two days, between March 8 and 9, with athletes from across the province converging at the stadium with hopes to book a spot at the National Track and Field Championships which will be held in Pretoria.

He said he was testing his limits after sustaining a leg injury a few weeks prior to the competition and, as a result, he did not anticipate winning anything.

“With the same leg condition, I just participated in the school district championships where I won the 100-meter heat and placed fourth overall.

“I also qualified to compete in the school provincial championships.

“Securing the bronze medal is a testament to my tenacity and stamina. My goal is to qualify for continental tournaments and place first at the national champs in Pretoria,” said Pila.

According to Pila’s coach, Thulani Sibeko of Sibeko Coaching Trainign Group, since joining the club in November, he has improved.

“He competes in the 100 and 200 meters and has demonstrated his commitment despite his injuries.

“We are also getting ready for the Pretoria competitions. Next year we hope to win every competition at the club and school levels,” said Sibeko.

The stadium was booming with other sports such as the high jump, long jump and javelin.

The CGA will host its provincial senior championships on March 16 at UJ Auckland Park Athletics Stadium.
