Germiston hosts RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta this weekend

RMB National Squad will use the event as part of the preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Victoria Lake Rowing Club will host the 116th edition of the RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta on January 27 and 28 at Germiston Lake.

Featuring nearly 1 000 boats over the two-day event, the RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta is poised to deliver a thrilling spectacle of rowing that showcases the sport at its peak.

The competition will showcase a diverse range of talent, from school-level rowers to seasoned master rowers.

With participants hailing from across South Africa, including Durban and Cape Town, this event will be a display of national rowing prowess.

The RMB National Squad, South Africa’s senior Olympic rowing team, will grace the event as part of the preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Christopher Baxter and John Smith (men’s pair) and Courtney Westley (women’s single scull) already qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The weekend will boast a mix of rowing combinations, offering the opportunity to learn from seasoned veterans.

The RMB National Squad members will be competing for their respective clubs, providing a platform for the wider rowing community.

Attendees are encouraged to visit the RMB National Squad under their RMB Gazebo throughout the weekend.

Prominent participants include Katherine Williams and Holly Crews in the women’s double sculls, Paige Badenhorst and Courtney Westley, and University Games medallists Chloe Cresswell and Nadia Gaspari.

In the men’s pairs category, anticipate a thrilling contest between teams including John Smith and Henry Torr; Christopher Baxter and James Mitchell; and Adriaan Venter paired with Luc Daffarn.

Darryl Williams, chair of Victoria Lake Rowing Club, says, “We eagerly anticipate another successful RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta. The presence of our national rowers adds a special significance to the event, especially in an Olympic year.”

Tiago Loureiro, head coach of the RMB National Squad, believes that the RMB VLC National Sprints Regatta is an opportunity for the community to come together and compete in a short course.

“This regatta makes racing more spectator-friendly while exposing junior, student, Under 23 and master rowing to the RMB National Squad.”
