Athletes qualify for inter-provincial champs after victory in Germiston

They both won the girls' and boys' 1 200m after producing the fastest times in the distance in their categories this year.

Mahlatse Mamonyane and Myeki Ndiphile booked their places in this weekend’s ASA Sub-Youth Track and Field Inter-Provincial Championship in Secunda after winning the 1 200m titles in their categories during the provincial championship on November 18 at Germiston Stadium.

The East Athletic Club (EAC)’s Mamonyane stormed to a personal best finish of 03:58 to win the girls’ U11 title while Ndiphile, from Katlehong Athletic Club, produced the fastest time in the boys’ category this year, after crossing the line in 03:38.

Mamonyane cut off six seconds of her PB of 04:05 achieved in the second and third league meetings of the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) juniors’ track and field season.

She will be joined by her EAC teammates Nqobile Banda, who won the girls’ U11 60m dash, and Mathapelo Ntanga and Thato Sesoko, who were second and third in the girls’ U13 1 500m.

The Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC)’s Chelsea van Dyk won bronze in the U13 girls’ 800m, finishing in an improved 02:22.

The BNAC’s middle-distance runners, Siyanda Madlabane and Lea Klingenberg, will join Van Dyk at the inter-provincials while sprinters Logan Oosthuizen and Heike Duvenage, as well as long jumper Moosa Mohlala, will also represent CGA in Secunda.

The Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC)’s Lanelda Herbst and Megan Cunha asserted their dominance in the U11 shot put with Herbst winning the event with a throw of 10.61m while Cunha threw 10.30m for second place.

Amore Steyn also qualified for the inter-provincials with a massive 33.87m throw in the girls’ U13 discus while Sjanni Botha was fourth overall in the U11 long jump, after jumping 4.26m.

On the field, Anzaret Strauss continued her good form with a bronze medal in the girls’ U13 200m and a sixth-place overall finish in the 100m.

Neika Weideman was fourth in the girls’ U11 70m hurdles while Joshua Strydom and Dian van Schalkwyk were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the boys’ U11 70m hurdles.

The CGA track and field commission chairperson, Maggie Dicks said, “Thank you to all the athletes, coaches and spectators who supported us. I wish the athletes going to the sub-youth championships in Mpumalanga on December 2 the best of luck.”
