Putter won gold, silver and bronze in the high jump, long jump and 100m, respectively.

Beukes said she had not anticipated winning because she was ill and had less time to train for the competition.

“I competed against highly competitive athletes in the 40- to 44-year-old age group,” said Beukes.

She is proud to have a BPharm degree from the University of North West and works as a pharmacist in Germiston.

“I gave up playing sports to focus on my degree. I am happy to be winning medals and regaining my mojo.”

Putter is a former Malvern Primary School and Kensington Secondary School alumni with a background in rugby and boxing.

He said he never competed in athletics until recently, and to his surprise, he excelled in it.

He competed in the men’s age group of 50- to 55-year-olds at the African Masters Championships.

“In May, I won gold at the SA Championships in the high jump and silver in the long jump.”
