Germiston High wins girls league

Both teams have advanced to the next rounds of the competition since 2019.

Germiston High School girls soccer team won the Janine van Wyk (JVW) Girls School League.

The league is one of the biggest leagues for girls’ football in South Africa. The league was pioneered in 2012 with 12 hopeful Ekurhuleni teams entering.

The overall winner of the JVW Schools League is crowned through a playoff weekend, where all the top schools battle it out in a two-day playoff.

Putting the cherry on top, the JVW Girls School League has seen aspiring players scouted for national teams.
The youngsters were delighted to have won the league for a second consecutive year.

“We were the U15 champions last year and the U16 champions this year.

“As the competition progresses, we now earn the right to compete against other schools in the playoffs. The open team was defeated in the quarterfinals of last year,” said coach Prudence Mwoyoweshumba.

“As they did not place in the top two on the log standings this year, the open team was not eligible to play in the playoffs this year,” said Mwoyoweshumba.

“Both teams have advanced to the next rounds of the competition since 2019, with the exception of this year’s open, where they placed third in the league,” he said.

“I think it’s about time that resources for the advancement of women’s soccer are identified. As a school, we require funding as well as sanitary towels, soccer boots, training uniforms and shield guts. Our girls don’t play soccer outside of school for the most part.

Janine van Wyk hands over a medal to the Germiston High School player.

“They are the talent that we must invest in and when they go back home they must find teams to play for.

“Sport contributes to their physical and mental wellness, therefore it’s vital that we support them in areas of their need,” said Mwoyoweshumba.

Janine van Wyk made her debut for South Africa in 2005 and was appointed captain of Banyana Banyana in 2013. Van Wyk became the first captain in history to lead South Africa at a Women’s World Cup.
