Local baseball club reaches a milestone of 120 years

Giants Imps Baseball Club, celebrating an astounding 120 years of sports history.

Giants Imps Baseball Club, a sports institution with 120 years of history, celebrated its impressive milestone on September 2 at their home grounds in Edenvale.

Led by president Aneline Butler, the club hosted an event that showcased their commitment to the community and their enduring passion for the game.

The day began with a display of young talent, featuring the U8 and U10 teams.

Baseball players enjoyed an eventful day at Edenvale sports ground.

Another exciting match was a friendly between Vaal Dodgers Baseball and the local club.

Butler, who has served as president for two years, joined the club at the age of nine. She has since then carried on the club’s values to the next generation.

Despite facing challenges, particularly due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the club is determined to rebuild and expand.

“We are trying to get new players to join us as we have started our junior season. Boys and girls between the ages of eight to 18 are welcome,” shared Butler.

She added that the club is a family. “To get the people to join is difficult but once they join they stay.”

To club is also selling its baseball stock and is trying to build its wish list to raise funds. The money will go towards the club’s maintenance and fixing of the fence.

The Vaal Dodgers Baseball team plays a friendly against Giants Imps at Edenvale.

“We would be grateful for anybody who can help us. We have to maintain our field it needs paint,” stated Butler.

She said as a local club they are trying to build the community and keep the ‘fields alive’.

The club faces challenges, including ongoing issues with electricity and the theft of lights.
