CGA country league season ends with success

No temporary licenses will be allowed at CGA Cross Country Championships.

Central Gauteng Athletics concluded the 2023 cross-country league season on July 22 at Delta Park, Randburg, in collaboration with RAC.

It is unfortunate that at the start of the first event an accident of a bus, with a number of athletes, was reported to have happened just outside the venue.

Athletes were reported injured and not being able to participate on the day as they had to be rushed to hospital.

ā€œAll athletes were discharged with the exception of one athlete who required more medical attention. We wish all the injured athletes who were involved in the accident speedy recovery,ā€ said CGA PR and communications intern Nongcebo Siziba.

ā€œThe day unfolded well with athletes coming out in numbers to display excellent performances and compete with dedication as this was their final chance to prepare for the CGA Cross Country Championships taking place on August 19 at Kagiso Stadium,ā€ said Siziba.

Boys and girls in the U8 category kicked the day off with a 1km race with great excitement, energy and resilience.

In the senior women’s 2km event, outstanding performances were delivered by Farida Zwane of Rockies, who claimed first place in 07:47 followed by Makoma Batji of Maxed Elite in 08:29.

The bronze went to Ashley Shawe of Nedbank finishing in 08:31.

In the senior men 2km, Enoch Bokaba of Murray and Roberts clocked 06:28, followed by Tinashe Bure of Waterfall City in 06:32. Sicelo Ngcobo of Kagiso striders in 06:35 was third.

Siziba said another highlight of the day was the battle in the men’s U23 4km event which Andries Sesedi of Nedbank coming first in 12:50 followed by Johannes Morepe of Murray and Roberts clocking 12:59.

The third position went to Mzwakhe Mashaba of Boxer in 13:05.

ā€œAll athletes must have submitted a South African ID document or birth certificate by August 16. No ID documents or birth certificates will be accepted on August 19 at the provincial championships.

ā€œAthletes with N next to their names in the results cannot win medals, prize money or be selected for the provincial team to the SAs. No temporary licenses will be allowed at CGA Cross Country Championships.

All athletes must be licensed with a club. Provincial championships entries will open on July 31 and close on August 13.

Only pre-entries submitted on this link: https://cgacrosscountry.wixsite.com/home will be accepted, no late entries or entries on the day of the championships will be accepted.

ā€œSpectators will be allowed into the venue at an entry fee of R50 and R30 for athletes,ā€ said Siziba.
