Central Gauteng Athletics dominates inter-provincial championships

To cap off CGA’s good showing, four athletes from the organisation set new records at the event.

Central Gauteng Athletics led the charts with 50 medals at the ASA sub youth inter-provincial championship at Pilditch Stadium on November 26.

The organisation had sent a strong contingent of 123 athletes who brought home 18 gold, 19 silver and 13 bronze medals.

To cap off CGA’s good showing, four athletes from the organisation set new records at the event.

Mia Pearson broke the girls U11 high jump record of 1,50m set by Rojandi Coetzee in 2019. She leapt to a 1,52m height to set a new record.

The pair of Jaden Simpson and Jaydon Fairlie smashed Willie van Heerden’s 16-year boys U13 200m record of 23.49 seconds.

Jaden finished the race in 23.23 seconds, while Jaydon finished in 23.39.

Khotso Motsamai stole the show after he obliterated the boys U11 long jump record, leaping 5.29m to smash Adrian Joubert’s 2014 jump of 5.05m.

“The organisation congratulated every athlete that represented the province.

“We were delighted to witness that some of our top performers during the season continued to maintain their outstanding performances at the inter-provincials,” said CGA general manager Mandla Radebe.

Among the great performances was the girls U13 1500m walk which saw the province collecting all podium positions.

Thato Rammalo claimed a gold medal winning in a time of 08:02. She was joined on the podium by Heylin Nelson who came second. Teresa Langa completed the podium for a CGA clean sweep in the event.

Oluchi Ndubueze brought home three gold medals, which she won in the girls U13 100m, 200m and long jump.

Also among the top performers was Tyran Brooks, who won a gold medal in the boys U13 1 500m event and a bronze in the 800m.

“Based on the great performances we are certain as the province that the future is bright.

“This age group is very important to determine and measure our progress of various development programmes within the province.

“We will be developing a system to trace these athletes in the next four to eight years to ensure that we retain them in athletics, but most importantly ensure that they continue to compete at high-level athletics championships,” Radebe concluded.
