Disability sport club receives support from Betway

The club offers access to sporting opportunities for differently abled persons.

November is disability awareness month.

This month is celebrated globally and this year the international theme proclaimed by the United Nations is “Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all”.

Betway South Africa aims to remove those barriers as they kickstarted the national disability month celebrations with an impactful community sport development initiative.

They partnered with the Kwa-Thema Disability Sports Club at the Kwa-Thema Stadium to highlight, not only the importance of removing barriers, but also to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities.

The club offers access to sporting opportunities for differently-abled persons.

As part of recognising this month, Betway donated sporting equipment and apparel to the value of R45 000 to the club to ensure it can continue to deliver on its mission of providing access and an opportunity to up skill athletes who have disabilities.

Club founder and director Aubrey Mathibela said they are grateful for the partnership with Betway.

“We have been in existence for over 10 years and we rely on government funding and generous community members to fund our training and overall activities. As a club and Kwa-Thema community, we extend our heartfelt gratitude,” said Mathibela.

Even with limited resources at its disposal, the club has still managed to produce some of the country’s top performing athletes which includes Zanele Situ, a two-time gold medallist in javelin at the Paralympics and IPC World Championships.

Also in attendance on the day was the brand’s ambassador, Lucas Radebe, who praised the club’s commitment to uplifting people with disabilities.

“It is quite encouraging to see a club with limited resources doing so much for the community,” said Radebe.
