Netball workshop aims to empower women

“Organisations in underprivileged communities need support. This course is part of our ongoing support for building and empowering women in sport.

On September 28, Betway South Africa, in partnership with Ekurhuleni Netball Association, had its first-ever Betway Netball workshop at the Dinwiddie Sports Complex.

The aim of the workshop was to empower coaches and umpires.

Betway SA’s marketing manager David Rachidi said this partnership will see the Betway brand playing an active role in impacting women-led sport.

“Organisations in underprivileged communities need support. This course is part of our ongoing support for building and empowering women in sport.

“It’s a continuation of the brand’s monthly #BetwayCares community upliftment programme.

“Betway will be traveling to the East of Johannesburg to host the netball workshop for aspiring coaches and umpires,” said Rachidi.

The one day workshop saw a total of 40 participants, equally divided between coaches and umpires.

The workshop consisted of two classes where participants had the opportunity to ask questions and received advice from professionals.

“Through this workshop, we hope the participants will go back into their various communities around Katlehong, Thokoza, Vosloorus and surrounding townships to help develop the sport from their newly acquired skills,” said Rachidi.

He said through this workshop they aim to bring a positive impact to communities.

“Our support and contribution towards sport development across the country over the last two years continue to change lives for the better. The brand has proactively led from the front in positively impacting communities through various sporting initiatives that encourage more sport participation in communities.

“With the country set to host Africa’s first-ever Netball World Cup we believe the brand can make a sustainable contribution in helping the sport grow from a grassroots level.

“Through this netball workshop we believe the participants will go back into their respective communities to further grow and nurture future netball stars,” said Rachidi.

Attending the workshop was Proteas assistant coach Dumisani Chauke. She shared some insights on the importance of laying the right foundation at a grassroots level for the growth of netball.

“There is an incredible amount of raw, untapped talent in communities and with limited resources and support, it unfortunately goes unnoticed. Such initiatives by Betway undoubtedly go a long way in not only increasing awareness about the sport but also encouraging participation, which leads to the unearthing of future heroes and creating lifelong supporters of the game,” said Chauke.

She also encouraged players not to allow a lack of resources to hinder them from achieving their goals.

“I come from a disadvantaged background. We did not have resources, but I did not allow that to stop me from wanting to be the best. I took those challenges and made them my building blocks,” said Chauke.
