Lockdown running tips to keep you safe

The Katlehong Athletics Club shares tips to help keep runners safe on the roads.

With the announcement of level three of the lockdown, government has expanded the number of industries that can open, while still maintaining prohibitions on the movement of people and gatherings.

“This also means that people can do solo exercises between 6am and 6pm outdoors,” said Hloni Motloung, chairperson of the Katlehong Athletics Club.

Runners from the Katlehong Athletics Club get ready for a run before lockdown was announced.

“This step has seen a greater number of people going out for a run in the mornings.

“The roads may be dangerous for novice runners and joggers and with gyms closed, more people are finding running as an alternative option for exercise.”

The Katlehong Athletics Club has put together a few safety tips for running during lockdown:

• Run facing the traffic to be able to see cars approaching.
• Preferably walk/run/jog on the pavement, it’s much safer.
• Wear reflective, bright clothing.
• Do not wear earphones when running.
• Leave your gadgets (cellphone, speakers) at home.
• Make sure you tie your shoes well before you leave the house, as you do not want to pick up infections on the road.
• Run with a partner if possible, while avoiding running in groups as per level three lockdown regulations.
• Be considerate to other runners, particularly when you want to spit or clear your nose.
• Alter the pattern of your running route and run in familiar areas.
• Be on the lookout for road signs and adhere to them.
• Look both ways before crossing the road.
