Parkruns across the world halt, Victoria Lake Parkrun no different

Victoria Lake Parkrun suspended as Covid-19 pandemic sweeps through the country.

For many the Victoria Lake Parkrun is a great way to stay active, fit and healthy.

The weekly run takes place in the pleasant parkland surrounding Germiston Lake and people from all walks of life are encouraged to participate, from walkers or those taking their first steps in running to Olympians, from juniors to those with more experience, all are welcome.

The Victoria Lake Parkrun hosted its 182nd run last Saturday, but sadly it will be the last for a while.

“With the Covid-19 pandemic hitting the country, Parkrun SA has heeded the call of the President of South Africa, to assist in preventing the transmission of the virus, and is doing so by closing all parkrun events across South Africa, Namibia, and Eswatini with immediate effect,” said Tony Gordon, one of the directors of Victoria Lake Parkrun.

“Initially, this closure will be in place until the end of March, but this is largely to bring all parkrun countries into the same time frame.

“We very much expect closures to continue through April at least.

“Think of this, in the 22 countries and the 2 100 locations where there is normally a parkrun, this Saturday parkrunners will wake up with no parkrun event to go to.”

Parkrun apologised to all who rely on the event for their weekly exercise.

“We hope all our runners keep safe and keep training on their own as best they can,” said Gordon.

“Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will go a long way in keeping their mental and physical state intact and healthy during this very challenging time.

“Remember that all your fellow participants worldwide are also feeling the loss of not being at their weekly parkrun.

“Our volunteers are already chomping at the bit to get back in the saddle to bring you Victoria Lake Parkrun’s 183rd event.”
