Delville to host the SA Masters Swimming Championship

Swimmers will descend on Germiston from March 11 to 15.

The SA Masters Swimming Championship will be taking to the Delville Swimming Pool from March 11 to 14, with the open water swim on March 15.

Two of the 500 or so swimmers who will be competing in the event are Colin Morgan and Richard Townsend.

Townsend lost his arm in an accident many years ago and still swims with able-bodied swimmers.

Both are born-and-bred Germistonians and matriculated from Germiston High School in 1984.

“Richard inspired me to swim the Midmar Mile 24 years ago, and we have been competing ever since,” Morgan said.

Both joined a charity drive and form part of the 8 Mile Club at Midmar.

“One commits to raise or donate at least R12 000 to charity.

“Each of the swimmers swim the first race and once completed, they take a boat back to the start where they start the second race and so on.

“Four races take place on the Saturday and four on the Sunday, and together we raised R26 000,” said Morgan.

He added that he was never a swimmer at school, nor has he ever been coached.

“I am self-trained and just do my own training.

“If you are in the area, why not pop down on one of the days to see what the SA Masters Swimming Championship is all about?

“The youngest competitor is 20 and the oldest is 95.

“One swims in age categories of five years,” said Morgan.

People can look forward to seeing world champions, South African champions and other competitive swimmers at the championship.

“Others just swim to compete and have fun,” Morgan said.

Both swim out of Pretoria for the Coelacanths Masters Swimming Club.
