Athletes face tough competition and weather conditions

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) track and field season continues to heat up, with athletes pulling out all the stops.

Passionate athletes laced up their running shoes for the third Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) track and field meeting of 2020, which was held at the University of Johannesburgā€™s Soweto Campus last Saturday.

The event continued despite heavy rain.

The dayā€™s programme started with the 5km walk in which Zelda Schultz, of Murray and Roberts Athletics Club, showcased her talent.

In the second last lap of the event, Schultz was able to pass opponent Nthatisi Mokhele, of Run Walk for Life, to win the event in a time of 25 minutes and 56.04 seconds.

Schultz said she felt it was important for her to win the race as it would put her in good standing for future races.

Due to the rain, several events, including hurdles, long jump and triple jump, were cancelled.

The events were cancelled as race officials felt the wet and slippery conditions could lead to injuries.

In the menā€™s 800m race, Elvis Mokhonoana, Ryan Mphahlele, Brandon Lentswe and Nkosinathi Sibiya fought for podium positions.

Mokhonoanaā€™s coach, Elvis Khoza explained Mokhonoana began his preparation for the 2020 season in December and the results of his hard work are starting to show.

Keegan Nel made his mark in the boysā€™ u-15 javelin, which he won with a 53.70m throw.

Maggie Dicks, CGA chairperson, thanked all the athletes and coaches who took part in the event, despite the weather.
