Brothers showcase their paddling skills in river race

Paddlers take to the water in preparation for Dusi.

The FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon which takes place from Pietermaritzburg to Durban annually is the world’s toughest canoe endurance event.

It runs for 120km over three days, which includes running with the boat over hills and through bush, as well as paddling through major rapids and exciting white water technical challenges.

This year the Dusi will take place from February 27 to 29.

The Cele brothers lived on the banks of the Umsindusi River as children and learned to paddle in the Change a Life Programme in Natal.

Having lived in Johannesburg for some years and working as a coach at the Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC), based at Germiston Lake, Richard Cele’s successes have been visible in many events.

Partnering up with his younger brother Nhlanhla, they won the local two-day Klip River Race from Daleside to Meyerton, hosted by the Johannesburg Canoe Club, last weekend, and are looking forward to a successful finish at the Dusi.

They finished the race in a time of four hours and eight minutes.
