Young Eagles learn to soar

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club’s u-10 team continues to grow in the Easterns Cricket League.

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club’s u-10 side is growing in leaps and bounds in the Easterns Cricket League, and the club couldn’t be prouder.

“This team has shown us that hard work and determination pay off over time,” said club chairperson Martiens Grobler.

“From the beginning, we knew these children were something special.”

On Saturday, the club hosted Alberton Cricket Club at their home grounds, the Elspark Sports Complex.

Alberton were sent to bat first and were bowled out for 134 runs, in their allotted 25 overs.

“Every bowler took a wicket, which is a great achievement,” said Grobler.

Elsburg then took their turn at the crease, but, unfortunately, the team were bowled out for 93 runs.

This gave the visitors a 40-run victory.

Previously, the team hosted Benoni Northerns Cricket Club and won this encounter by eight wickets.

Benoni batted first and set a target of 140 runs, with one wicket in hand, in their allotted 25 overs.

“The bowlers gave an outstanding performance during the match and had Benoni against the ropes,” explained Grobler.

“The team managed to take six wickets in five overs for just 24 runs, but their lack of experience counted against them and Benoni were able to claw their way back into the game.”

The match’s top bowler was Alberto Lombart with five wickets in five overs for 30 runs.

Elsburg then took their turn at the crease and were able to knock up 141 runs, with eight wickets in hand.

“The boys beat the target on the last ball of the game,” said Grobler.

The day’s top batsmen were Lombart with 62 runs (not out) and Wian Scheepers with 28 runs.

“Luan Ackerman and Dimitri Lubbe also made valuable batting contributions,” said Grobler.

Grobler and fellow coach Theuns Herbst couldn’t be prouder of the progress the team have made and look forward to what the rest of the season holds.
