Athletes put their best foot forward

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) holds another successful track and field meeting at Germiston Stadium.

The Germiston Stadium was abuzz with activity, last Saturday, as approximately 2 900 athletes competed in Central Gauteng Athletics’ (CGA) latest track and field meeting of the 2019/20 season.

The athletes hailed from suburbs across Gauteng, including Krugersdorp, Randfontein, Roodepoort, Randburg, Johannesburg, Kempton Park, Germiston, Alberton, Boksburg, Benoni, Brakpan, Springs, Westonaria, Midrand and Sandton.

“We had 2 600 pre-entries, but 300 additional athletes arrived at the event,” explained Atiso Molefe on behalf of CGA.

“We cannot turn athletes away.

“However, it should be noted that the pre-entry system is in place to assist us in providing results in good time.”

The interest and participation in the CGA track and field meetings are slowly growing, according to Molefe.

“We are thrilled with the increase in numbers,” said Molefe.

“The numbers have tripled from September 21 to October 19.”

A noteworthy performance on the day came from Antonio Farmer, from North West University, who won the men’s u-20 5 000m walk, which opened the day’s activities, in a time of 23.01 minutes.

Farmer is set to defend his junior title at the Athletics South Africa Walking Championships, on November 16.
