Superheros fly through fun run

School of Achievement held a successful superhero-themed fun run last Saturday.

Runners and walkers from all walks of life, young and old, and of all fitness levels came together for School of Achievement’s Superhero Fun Run, last Saturday.

The fun run, which had 168 participants, helped raise funds for the dual-medium school.

“The school’s vision is to provide quality educational intervention for learners experiencing barriers to learning and development, specifically learning disabilities, within the philosophy of invitational education,” said Retha van Lingen, the head of department for occupational therapy at the school.

“The school was the first state-run remedial school in South Africa.

“The funds raised will help us provide quality education to our learners.”

When asked why the superhero theme was chosen for the run, van Lingen explained,

“At school we have a superhero programme in the foundation phase where the learners work towards good behaviour,” she said.

“Each week a superhero who showed exceptional behaviour is identified from each class and they are rewarded with a superhero cap.

“At the end of the term the learner in each class who received the most rewards is rewarded with a superhero shirt, which they are allowed to wear to school on a Friday.

“The superhero theme also slotted in well with the World Cup Rugby currently underway.”

The school was thrilled with how the event went.

“Some of the day’s highs and lows included four staff members and a dog participating in the event with the learners,” said van Lingen.

“The South African National Blood Service also received several blood donations on the day.

“One of the teachers, who was working at the water station, injured her shoulder while handing out water and had to go to hospital as a result.”
