Raptors wrestlers shine at Brakpan Challenge

Several wrestlers from the Raptors Wrestling Club travelled to Alberton for the Brakpan Challenge.

Wrestlers from near and far travelled to Alberton to participate in the Brakpan Challenge recently.

A number of different clubs participated in the event, including Alberton, Bears, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Danie van Zyl, Die Anker, Eagles, Elsburg, Heidelberg, Endlovo, KZN Elite, Mogol Nelspruit, Newcastle, NNR, Northern Natal, Ruiter, Rustenburg, Sonop, Soupel, Tuks, Vaal, Vanderbijlpark and West Rand wrestling clubs.

Among the competitors were 20 young wrestlers from the Raptors Wrestling Club.

The team gave a top performance, walking away with 10 gold medals, five silver medals and five bronze medals.

“One of the highlights of the event was Ada Smith’s performance.

“He won an astounding four matches in a row and then went on to defeat a South African champion, all in one day,” said Dewald de Wet, the head coach of the club.

Some of the day’s results:

• Taniqué Jansen van Rensburg won a gold and a silver medal.

• Daniella de Wet won a gold and a silver medal.

• Dewald de Wet (junior) won two gold medals.

• Jason Russell won a bronze medal.

• Joubert Deale won two silver medals.

• Shannon Jansen van Rensburg won a gold and a bronze medal.

• Charné Herman won a gold and a bronze medal.

• Markus Atterbury won a bronze medal.

• Jaun Vorster won a gold medal.

• Anton Strydom won a gold medal.

• Nathan van Niekerk won a silver medal.

• Kieron Visser won a bronze medal.

• Tiaan Jansen van Rensburg won a gold medal.

• Ada Smith won a gold medal.
