Local wrestlers shine at national championships

Elsburg Wrestling Club wrestlers come out on top at the national championships.

The Elsburg Wrestling Club has been a firm-standing sports club within the Elsburg community for more than 60 years, having opened its doors in 1955.

The club, found in Mare Street, has always aimed to hone and nurture young wrestling talent despite the dip in its membership numbers over the years.

Recently several of the club’s wrestlers travelled to Middelburg to compete in the National Senior, Junior, Cadet and Masters Championships.

The wrestlers shone in the competition bringing home nine medals in total, five gold and four silver medals.

“These results are a great achievement for such a small club with a new management team,” said Joep Joubert, media liaison for Elsburg Wrestling Club.

“The management, coaches, wrestlers and parents of the club are very proud of our wrestlers who competed.”

Following this success the Elsburg Wrestling Club hopes to grow their club’s membership.
