Simmer defeat Krugersdorp Harlequins

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club hosted Krugersdorp Harlequins, at Germiston Stadium, in their last game of the round robin stage of the Senior Grand Challenge, last Friday.

Simmer were glad to be back at home and in front of their home crowd after playing two consecutive away games, in Alexandra and Hartebeespoort respectively, and didn’t even mind the cold temperatures.

The home team were the first to put some points on the scoreboard when Shaun Steenkamp made his way over the try line in the fifth minute of the match.

The Harlequins responded to this early try by slowing the game down.

Their efforts paid off at they were soon awarded a penalty.

The visitors kicked for the posts but missed.

Simmer continued the match in fine form settling into the game plan coach and player Eben Barnard had set out for them in the practice sessions leading up to the match.

The team scored two more tries before the half-time whistle, while the Harlequins scored one, ending the half with a score of 15-5 to Simmer.

The second half kicked off just as the first had with Simmer visiting the try line within the first five minutes of play.

The home team kept up the pace throughout the second half scoring three more tries before the end of the match, to secure them a 39-10 victory.

The team’s tries were scored by Barnand, Franco Kotze, Emma Lukuza, Steenkamp, Ruan du Randt, Johan Roodt and Lourens Koekemoer.

The man of the match award went to Jaco Meyer.

The win will see the team advance to the semi-finals of the Senior Grand Challenge.
