Home-ground advantage leads Elsburg to success

A thrilling Kestrel League clash between two Ekurhuleni giants.

On the back of a streak of wins, some easy and some challenging, Elsburg Rugby Club geared up for a redemption match against East Rand Police Rugby Club, at the Elspark Sports Complex, on Saturday.

This was the second time the teams clashed in the Kestrel League this season.

The two first met in May when Elsburg suffered a 19-28 defeat to East Rand Police in an away game, played in Brakpan.

Roedolf Erasmus kept his eyes on the ball carried by an East Rand Police Rugby Club player while he attempted a tackle in the recent Kestrel League fixture played at the Elspark Sports Complex.

Hungry for the win, sporting a different type of confidence courtesy of grandstands filled with ecstatic supporters and the manifestation of the home-ground advantage, Elsburg were first to put their name on the scoreboard with a try from Marinus van Vuuren.

Unfortunately the trusted fly half Rudi Wessels could not deliver on the conversion.

The five-point lead was short-lived, as East Rand Police scored a try also with an unsuccessful conversion, leaving the half-time score at 5-5.

A quick steal by Roedolf Erasmus (green) of Elsburg Rugby Club left an East Rand Police Rugby Club player on the ground, as he darted off towards the try line at the Elspark Sports Complex, in a Kestrel League match, on Saturday.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Elsburg were awarded a penalty which added another three points to the scoreboard for the home team.

Taking the lead again seemed to have revitalised the home team, who went on to dominate their visitors for the remainder of the match.

Jonathan Wolmarans scored a try with a successful conversion by Wessels.

Following an intense scrum, Wessels won the ball and headed straight for the try line at high speed, dodging East Rand Police’s fullback, and earning him cheerful roars from the Elsburg spectators.

However, he followed up with an unsuccessful conversion.

East Rand Police resisted Elsburg’s attacks and managed to score a second try, this time with a successful conversion.

The full-time score was Elsburg 20, East Rand Police 12.
