Thami Xala took an interest in parkruns in 2017 and now dreams of joining a running club in his neighbourhood.
“Participating in the parkruns has motivated me to start running on weekdays as well and better my time when running 5km races.
“This has also improved my health and helped me keep my weight steady,” he said.
While promoting a healthy lifestyle with the help of the parkrun, receiving his red T-shirt marking his 50th run further inspired Xala to work on curbing unhealthy habits so he can reach the next milestone, the 100th run.
Xala was among the first runners to join the Rondebult Parkrun on October 7, 2017, and said over the years they’ve grown in numbers, varying from 100 to 150 runners a month.
“The parkrun is open to people of all age groups and we encourage potential runners to visit our website https://www.parkrun.co.za/register to register.
“No fees will be charged for registration and participants need only to register once,” he said.
Once you’ve registered, you will receive a bar code, print it and present it to the parkrun officials on the day to ensure your correct race time is captured.
The parkrun takes place from the corner of South Boundary and Heidelberg roads every Saturday from 8am.
