Germiston share points after draw

Germiston City Football Club played host to Linhill Celtic Football Club in the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League.

A vastly under-strength Germiston City Football Club first team took to the Germiston City Sports Grounds’ field, last Saturday, to face Linhill Celtic Football Club in the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League.

“Seven first team players were unavailable for the match,” explained club chairperson Peter Oliver.

Two minutes into the game Germiston’s defence brought down a Linhill player within the goal area, leading to a penalty for the visitors.

However, goalkeeper Clement Baloyi was able make a superb save keeping the game goalless.

Germiston slowly began to settle into the game, but their confidence was short-lived as Linhill were able to score in the 25th minute of the game.

This was followed by another goal 10 minutes later, after a miscommunication in the Germiston defence.

Germiston’s luck continued to worsen when goalkeeper Baloyi and Mdu Makwanshea were forced to leave the field with injuries.

“Coach Sreten Pavlovich had to call on reserves Comfort Molobela to fill in for Baloyi, and Kabelo Mashabela to fill in for Mkantshwa,” Oliver explained.

Despite the setbacks Germiston managed to hold the score at 0-2 until half-time.

The home team headed into the second half shaken, but were offered a lifeline five minutes when Tendai Rufai was brought down in the Linhill penalty box.

Germiston’s Dembi Mayimela made no mistakes when taking the free-kick and scored Germiston’s first goal of the match.

This seemed to be the boost the team needed and Germiston slowly began to claw their way back into the game.

A 73rd minute goal from Mayimela, his second in the match, allowed the team to equalise.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw, meaning the teams shared the match points.

Germiston’s reserve team lost their match against Linhill reserves 3-2.
