Entries open for Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni triathlon

The Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni triathlon will take place at Germiston Lake.

Entries for the 2019 Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni and Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay are officially open.

The Standard Bank 5150 African Triathlon Series has become one of the biggest standard distance triathlons in South Africa, attracting thousands of athletes per event.

With the introduction of the FUNTRI distances last year, there really is something for everyone.

The Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni had its first race in 2013 at Germiston Lake.

This year marks the seventh race and it kicks off at Germiston Lake once again on October 20.

This has become the annual spot for the event, attracting over 1 400 athletes each year.

King’s Beach in Port Elizabeth sees the start of the Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay and it attracts over 1 100 athletes nationally, with a large number of these being from the Eastern Cape.

As a shorter distance triathlon, the Standard Bank 5150 Triathlon series has something for everyone. It is challenging enough for an experienced athlete, but also easy enough for a beginner to try out.

“The Standard Bank 5150 African Triathlon Series has become a big attraction on the South African triathlon scene for beginners and seasoned athletes alike.

“We are excited to host these events in the provinces where triathlon is the most popular – the Eastern Cape and Gauteng.

“The number of first-time athletes we’ve seen enter the 5150 series of triathlons has been remarkable,” said Keith Bowler, managing director of Ironman South Africa.

The 2018 Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni saw 54 per cent of all the athletes enter in their first 5150 event ever, while the 2018 Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay had 36 per cent.

5150 triathlons take the format of an Olympic distance triathlon, featuring a 1.5km swim, a 40km bike and a 10km run.

Last year, the 5150 African Triathlon Series also introduced the FUNTRI, a shorter triathlon and more manageable for first timers.

The FUNTRI distance features a 450m swim, 20km bike and 5km run, with team and individual entries available.

Team entries also allow athletes to participate with friends, family or colleagues, with each team member completing one leg of the race, making for a good team-building exercise or a social race.

A limited number of individual and team entries are available.
