Runners take on annual Alan Robb Race

The Alan Robb Race was once again a hit with runners from far and wide.

Runners from near and far braved the chilly autumn morning, last Sunday, and arrived at the Germiston Stadium to take part in the 2019 Alan Robb Race.

The event is held annually by Germiston Callies Harriers in honour of Alan Robb, who won four Comrades Marathons in Callies’ colours.

Over 1 200 runners participated in this year’s event, with the oldest being 93.

The race, formerly known as the Legends Race, included a 15km and a 32km race, with runners hitting the streets at 6.30am to the sound of a siren.

The men’s 15km was won by Mbongeni Zoza, while Elizabeth Potter won in the women’s 15km division.

Bright Mikdangwe finished first in the men’s 32km run, while Belinda Marais won the women’s event.

In keeping with tradition, the day also hosted a 5km fun run, which aimed to raise funds for a worthy charity.

Callies announced that all proceeds from this year’s fun run will be donated to Siyabonga Children’s Home.

The home was established in 1989 as a foster home and evolved to a child and youth care centre and currently cares for a number of children between the ages of one and 18 years old.

“Approximately R5 350 was raised for the home,” said Nicky du Preez on behalf of the club.

The club was thrilled with the success of this year’s race.

“The race was a huge success and there were no hiccups.

“We received many compliments from runners and other clubs,” said du Preez.
